Throughout my professional career in the Health Industry it is one question I have been asked over and over again “What are vitamins and how do they actually help me?” So here we go…
Vitamins are vital to the human people, without them you wouldn’t be able to sustain life. They can be obtained from organic foods or dietary supplements. I always say to my clients it is way better for your mind and body if you get them naturally from foods. Therefore, I would always recommend that you shouldn’t eat the same foods more than once a week, as the more variety of foods you have the more variety of vitamins you will obtain. However, this is always easier said than done.
What they are not
Vitamins are not a “pill” as so many people think they are. They cannot replace food, they have no caloric or energy value of their own. They cannot be assimilated without ingesting food. Vitamins themselves are not the components of our body structures. If you think that “if I take vitamins, stop eating and believe you will healthy”, then you are wrong!
Each vitamin has specific jobs. If you have low levels of certain vitamins, you may get health problems. For example, if you don’t get enough vitamin C, you could become anemic. Some vitamins may help prevent medical problems. Vitamin A prevents night blindness. Therefore, there are 13 vitamins your body needs. They are:
- Vitamin A
- B vitamins(thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin K
How they Work
If you think of your body as a car’s combustion engine and vitamins as spark plugs, you have a fairly good idea of how these work. Vitamins regulate our metabolism through enzyme systems. They are components of our enzyme systems which, acting like spark plugs, energise and regulate our metabolism, keeping us in tune and functioning at high performance. However, it must be noted that compared to our intake of other nutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates), our vitamin intake is minuscule.
